Windows 98, ME, 2000

On the Desktop, Right click the Internet Explorer Icon and choose Properties

The General Tab

This page contains the Home Page, Temporary Internet Files and History Settings

You can set your Home page to anything you wish.(Although we recommend http://www.volstate.net)

The Temporary Internet Files Settings allow you to delete stored files and cookies as well as set a limit on the amount of storage you want to allow for Internet Content.

The History Settings allow you to set the number of days to keep links to pages that you have browsed.

Unless you have specific needs the Colors, Fonts, Languages and Accessibility settings are set to default.

The Security Tab

Here you can set the security level of your browser, should you need to disable certain features such as javascript or message prompts( eg. going from a secure page to an unsecure page)

The Content Tab

Here you will find the Content Advisor, Certificates, and Personal Information Settings

Content Advisor - you can set Internet Explorer to block access to certain sites(good for Parents who wish to control the Internet Content thier children can have access to)

Certificates - are issued by certain sites to you for verification purposes(most people will not ever need to change this setting)

Personal Information - This Feature lets you turn on AutoComplete- a way of filling in forms, usernames and passwords as well as web address's by storing the information you enter. It also has a My Profile - to store your personal information; name, address, phone number, email...

The Connections Tab

This is where all Dial-up connections that will be used by Internet Explorer will be listed.

To run the Internet Connection Wizard click on Setup at the top of the page

To make changes to a particular Dial-up Connection choose it in the list and choose Settings. To make a new connection click Add. To get rid of a connection you will not longer use or one that may be damaged choose Remove.

If you are using a Modem to connect with the Dial-up connections it is a good idea to set 'Always dial my default connection' This will ensure that you will always be able to connect.

The Local Area Network (LAN) Settings would be used only if you were using an Always On connection such as ISDN, DSL or Cable(these settings are default and do not need changing unless specified to do so)

The Programs Tab

This screen allows you to select which programs will work with your internet settings such as email, conference calling, and Calendars.

If you have programs other than Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, such as Netscape Communicator, Eudora Mail, or Microsoft Outlook, you may want to set those programs to handle the tasks here.

If at some point you think there may be a problem using some other program you can click on Reset Web Settings... to set them back to the Default settings using Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

The Advanced Tab

This tab is not really for end users, it is more for those experienced in Networking and Internet Explorer.

These Settings control how some content is displayed on web pages as well as Special features in Internet Explorer, Script debugging is one of those features(this helps to determine where the error lies within a web page, for diagnostic purposes)
